Many people would not understand, but, this happens when you made a higher payment on your credit card and (as a routine from citi card) they send you a check back for the positive credit, this may also mean that after you paid your card to zero, there was a return transaction, which gave you a positive balance resulting in a check that they send you to avoid reporting positive credit to certain credit bureaus. Anyways, after a while (several months "+-6") when you do not cash or deposit that check (from the positive credit) they send you a letter canceling the check; for the same reason you did not receive the letter from the check, you may not receive the correspondence with the note to void the check, then they will credit such amount for when you have a debit balance higher than the amount they are holding thus giving you a shocking surprise (I doubt they are required to pay back interest on that money) note that the process may take also more than a year. Check your statements several months back, it may not feel like a surprise anymore.
